The Sound of Olives

Here it is, 2008. We would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year!
Yesterday, we turned the harvest over to our picking crew. I love to hear the olives raining down onto the tarps below each tree. As the olives hit the tarp, they make a hollow thumping sound that is like a syncopated drum roll. It is especially nice to hear this sound when it is someone else who is picking the olives. We’re now in a race to finish the harvest before the really terrible weather is upon us or the freezes get too intense. The next 3 weeks will be hectic around here.
